Noah Webster, whose Blue Back Speller (1788) sold 82 million copies within a century of its publication, was a great pioneer of US English as opposed to British English. He said that establishing a national language was as important as winning the American Revolution itself. The spelling of such terms at theater instead of theatre and color instead of colour is Webster's legacy.
Is the fact that he's in my bloodline a coincidence? I think not.

Andy and Rich...If you remember the story of Thanksgiving the Pilgrims were leaving Great Brittian to avoid religous persecution. What is failed to be communicated is that not only were the fleeing from such religous persecution, but also from that of language. They fled to America to preserve the truth of Chritianity and the true English Language; and Mr. Webster did the World a favor by writing in to a book for further preservation. But I am only glad that Britan has preserved enough of the true English language so that we can still communicate...
Just kiddin' fellas.
A great post KC...!?!
